Buckminster Fuller and SpaceShip Earth

Bucky's vision of what Earth could be,, has influenced me to this day; it is because of him that I most likely still believe that a more sane world could exist. If we would allow it to happen it is possible right now, to end hunger, to house everyone comfortablly and do it with less resources than most imagine possible. You have to admire anyone, who as a young man, was paid the compliment by Albert Einstein who said, “Young man, you amaze me!” He truly is one of the most amazing souls ever to grace this planets surface. It is so sad that his words to the world are not being utilized to the benifit of mankind like he wished.

I have always wanted to have a home that was designed on the principles of Buckys' Geodesic Dome, which is his most recognized invention. The principles allow for cheap construction and strength which grows proportionately with size, the bigger a geodesic dome the stronger and LIGHTER that it becomes, a very amazing thing in itself. This invention alone would allow for cheap, safe, resource friendly housing for most of the world,,, if we would utilize it. The geodesic dome is able to cover more space without internal supports than any other enclosure,, he once documented the feasibility of a dome two miles in diameter that would enclose mid-town Manhattan in a temperature-controlled environment, then pay for itself within ten years from the savings of snow-removal costs alone. How is that for innovation!!!

The real remarkable thing about Bucky was something that happened after the death of his first child. He was bankrupt, disillusioned without a job and had a new daughter and wife, but He was about to attempt suicide by jumping into the frigid Lake Michigan,, we are so lucky by what happened next in this great man's Mind.

He realized that his life was not his own to take.
He realized that he didn't have the right to take his own life,
because he belonged to the vast universe.
He made up his mind to start the real experiment of his lifetime, which would be to see what ONE, PENNILESS,, seemingly hopeless, Human could do that would benifit ALL OF HUMANITY. What difference might the little individual make, acting alone, beyond that of institutions?"
The Universe responded by giving him the mind that could fathom how mankind could care for itself on this SPACESHIP EARTH,, a term he coined.
My favorite book(besides Spaceship Earth) by this great mind is called CRITICAL PATH.
In this book he shows how humanity can pool together and become exceedingly successful. It shows how we could connect all the power plants so EVERYONE had cheap power. I use to think that the leaders of our planet need to read this book, now I realize that it is imperative that we ALL read this book before it is too late. Because we need to be inspired for a more bright future in these dark days. We need hope, and I find in this book hope for mankind. Right now it is just a dream, but I imagine. And I know I am not the only one who thinks this way.
Bucky invented/intiated the WORLD GAME which can be defined as a ''game'' were participants try ``To make the World work / for 100% of Humanity / In the shortest possible time / Through spontaneous cooperation / Without ecological offense / Or the disadvantage of anyone.'' It is a fascinating way to view our current resources and our ability to cooperate and make the most of the what humans need to live fully. The game has been played by world leaders and ambassadors at the UN in attempts to help them understand this issue of using the gifts of Earth for the good of All.
His Synergetics utilizes the Natural world geometric shapes as a metaphysical ground which can also be used by our science to improve mankinds plight. Synergetics could be defined as a metaphoric language for communicating experiences using geometric concepts This man tapped into the Universe to reveal a world of the future we still could attain, if we simple demand of ourselves the audacity to act as he, and try to find how we,,, simple, single humans can help humanity as a whole. This is possible because he didn't think,,,, I am going to become rich,, material wealth was not the object of his goals. His goal was the future and was very much one of the first Futurist. His thoughts on " the geometry of thinking'' has influenced me since the first day I came across the term. His vision was world encompassing and wholistic in every aspect. We have in his work a model that could transform humanity,, if we utilized it. We must utilize it, as it is one of the few intelligent options that we have at this point in time. There are so many things about this man that inspire me to have hope. I am again looking over the vast amount of information this man has left us, and the most inspiring thing of all.....
The thing that is on my mind right now is the question that Bucky asked himself after he realized he could not kill himself.
What can I do that will be of benifit to ALL Humanity?

Thank you so much Barbara, I believe I could safely say the same about you,, And that I am happy that you are still blogging as it has been such a blessing to me to get to read your thoughts. You are such a calm collected person in your words and comments to everyone, no matter how they react in their own world of words. Hope you have had a wonderful week, and that it has been spiritually uplifting for you and family.

Hey Scott, I have never read and B. Fuller, but I will now. I have often wondered what I could do to benefit humanity but being one small, seemingly insignificant person, it seems hard to imagine I personally could do much. But then there are people who seem to be able to have so many good ideas and such an impact. It really puts the rest of us to shame. Maybe we all ought to give this more of our time and attention. Who knows what might happen if we did? :-)

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Great post .... I too think that I am going to have to find a B. Fuller book as well ... put it on the list!

"Geodesic Dome"

I am surrounded by Geodesic domes - "Ontario Place," in Toronto. The sight for "Expo 67" in Montreal. Also I personally love them as jungle gyms :).

Anyhow... back to what is truly important ..."What can I do that will be of benifit to ALL Humanity?"

Beautiful question! Sort of calls one "up to the plate so to speak!"

I wish to be more humane.......... as human as possible.

Hey Kate,I am hopeful that more of us will try this experiment, and see what we can come up with collectively for humanity... it is a great thing in my opinion.
Little Sparrow, I do believe that Bucky was the one who did the dome for the Expo 67 in Montreal!!!
Hopefully we can all become a bit more Human,, it would be nice for us all in the end.
