Etemenanki

"Now the whole earth had one language and few words. And as men migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with a top to reach the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men had built. And the LORD said, 'Behold, they are ONE people, and they have all ONE LANGUAGE; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; and nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.' So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.' Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth." (Genesis 11:1-9)

Well, Preacher Scott here, to give my interpretation:
First off, the God of the bible is like James T. Kirk for me, just another Joe, who happens to have some kick ass technology. I will not deny the reality of a 'real' god, but my belief is that none of the Anthropomorphic images we have been taught are what is the Truth.
Zecheria Sitchin set it in motion along with Von Daniken to say, the Gods may have just been astronauts,, after reading alot of the ancient texts I tend to agree that the ancients may have been describing contact with an advanced culture,, not "real'' gods and goddesses.. Having been raised on Star Trek, this was a very easy jump for me philosophically as for many of my generation.. Plus I actually studied and read and reread the Bible. I am still intrigued by it, even though I call myself a Heretic Pagan, I find it fascinating if it really is recording some vestige of historical fact,,,,, however distorted by the Priest, Temples, Mosques and Churches.
.
So, my take is this,
Humans united in the plain of Shinar (Iraq, Interesting,, looking for OIL maybe!!)
and said to themselves ,,, after having just came out of a horrific 'God' induced Flood,,
lets not let this shit happen again.
We can get off this planet( I think it possible it represents mankinds attempt then for space flight,, sounds crazy,, just think of the other interpretations)
just as well if we put our resources together and
UNITE as ONE HUMAN RACE WITH ONE LANGUAGE.
For me this is central to the story, mankinds One and Only Time of Unity was Destroyed by the PERSON
who later became a GOD,
of Christians, Jews and those Allah Love 'em Muslims.
He is One and the Same.
Why do you think this is really so, in this story. Why would an accomplishment such as described scare the BeJesus out of good Ol YHVH himself??
I know, blasphemy right. Well I don't think so, my (and Sitchins, plus numberous others in different disiplines) theory that there was a very advanced technological society before our own,,, here in the 21 century.
My only real question is Why was this ONE and ONLY time IN HUMAN history,,, if you believe the Bible,,, Why did this Unity of Mankind frighten the "Deity"??
He said himself that if the goal was accomplished, then it might be too late???? And that then 'they' ( THIS IS US PEOPLE) would be able to DO ANYTHING that they PUT THEIR MINDS TO!!!!!
To big for our britches the deity thought,,, and given our WARLIKE tendancy, if I was hovering over this planet,, watching all the gory wars of humans past (or present) I would be wanting to make sure they didn't get off the Planet to disturb the HEAVENS!!!!
Can't Let these FOOL HUMANS out into the Cosmos!!!
Which brings me to one of my points. If this is the case, I could well understand YHVH demand for a way to avert the Humans from working so closely together, and language is NOW one of the main problems to Understanding our fellow Humans... good little genetic(?? or brain wave transforming??) trick Different languages,, we will never get along after that, right??
Today, we have to worry about this same thing happening. Our leaders at the Pentagon (the dumbass idiot meglomaniacs that they are) are taking steps to ensure that Space has it's full arsenal of weapons !!!!

Good job, you bunch of Monkeys,, Now we are going to have a bunch of pissed off deities, coming back to kick our ass again,,, I assume in that Last Battle all you freaks have been praying for,,,, see Armegeddon?

Oh well just felt the rant today.....and this post is not directed at your 'faith' just what may have been a 'false start' to the beginnings of many religions.......
and Just a Blog Thought,,, that I have thought very often...

Etemenanki Is what the Sumerians themselves called Babel.

You, LP and others have convinced me that blogging, in moderation, can be good for one's soul and body.

I do not see this as a rant, but as an intelligent observation!

Interesting theory. :-)

Just last night I was talking to a woman who said she believed that all of life on earth (plants, animals, fungus, etc) used to communicate through telepathy, but that humans created language because we preferred not to feel what our fellow creatures were feeling. We wanted things more abstract. I think that's interesting too.

There are many totally weird things in the Bible that can be looked at so many ways, it's really a fascinating book. It seems odd to me that some of the most conservative and unimaginative people tend to be the ones to read and interpret it. And their interpretations are so dull! Sometimes I wonder if we have read the same book, you know? The Bible is some surreal stuff. :-)

I love reading various and individual perspectives on religion and such. I especially like the way you incorporated Star Trek. I also grew up on Star Trek and so I can relate to your point of view!

Barbara,,, YES, so glad you are finding a balance with blogging!! Your voice is needed.
Kate, one of my favorite Language speech theories was by Terrance McKenna who believed Mushrooms were/are intelligent beings and our eating them brought about alot of what is Language and religion.. I am partial to this theory,, and a 'shroom now and then,,,lol,,
Nova, For anyone who has seen Star Trek it makes alot of sense. Think they even did an episode about it before, the whole Non Interference issue is about what our "Gods" did NOT do,, Leave us to Evolve on our own..

Scott: I must seek out this Terrance McKenna because I have a total fascination with mycorrhiza, I think fungal networks are the internet of the plant world. (Disclaimer: I also enjoyed *many* shrooms in my day, they were my drug of choice, so that might be part of the reason why! )

Kate, you must be on the same page as I, and the only other person I know who knows about mycorrhiza,,, the internet of the planet thing is just what Terrance talked about. He is dead now, but I had the chance to meet him once,, really was a cool dude,, always on 'shrooms.

Scott I have to say, (smiling) that I agree with you. The Bible is a book of stories, they are better then most books. Wisdom can be found in all things.

I believe in the Creator of creations and I find the Creator in all of us, otherwise how could we do some of the wonderful things that we do?

This was a very thought provoking post, with a little humor ... and that's a combination for good damn reading!

Also, he he he .. I love the way you express yourself!
